Chapter 19 The Hive Mind

The lilies had gone from the Queen of Scots, Amaryllis was pleased to note. She wondered if Ashley had removed them, or perhaps they’d been given to the grieving relatives. As far as she could tell, there hadn’t been a lot of grieving at the party in the pub, but, looking at it charitably, the mourners might have been extra conscientious about drowning their sorrows. At least Charlie must have made a good profit. This might make up for the many occasions on which the only customers had been Jemima, Dave, Jock and Hamish the dog.

‘There’s left-over nibbles,’ Charlie told her. ‘I’ve got them in my fridge in the flat. Let me know if you want some and I’ll bring them downstairs... The dog quite likes them but they’re a bit too dainty for me.’

Jemima and Dave were at their usual table. They greeted her with enthusiasm.

‘I told you Amaryllis would be in tonight,’ said Dave to Jemima. ‘She’ll tell us the whole story.’

‘Don’t pester the girl now. Let her sit down first,’ Jemima told him sternly. She turned to Amaryllis. ‘Jock said you found another body. And there’s been some incident up on the golf course. Christopher was there. Have you spoken to him?’

Amaryllis blinked. ‘Incident?’

She was extremely miffed that Jemima apparently knew more about what was going on than she did. She would have to review her channels of communication.

‘It was on the Facebook page,’ said Jemima. ‘Somebody saw the police going up there, and they asked if anybody knew what it was.’

Amaryllis sighed heavily. She had a Facebook account, but she often didn’t log into it for days on end. Evidently that wasn’t good enough, in this world of fast-moving events.

‘I can tell you about the body,’ she said to them, ‘but I don’t know any more than you about this other incident.’

‘Never mind,’ said Dave. ‘Maybe Christopher will be in later on.’

She had just finished telling them about the discovery at the cottage when the door opened and Kyle Prestonfield came in. He glanced over towards their table and grinned happily. It was almost as if he were overjoyed to see them.

‘Don’t say he fancies you,’ said Dave to Amaryllis.

‘Dave! Don’t be so daft,’ said Jemima.

Kyle brought his Old Pictish Brew over. Amaryllis recalled that only a couple of weeks before he had still been drinking lemonade. She felt the warm satisfaction of having converted someone to the true path.

‘Cheers!’ he said.

‘I don’t suppose you know anything about this incident on the golf course,’ said Amaryllis.

His smile broadened. ‘As it happens,’ he said, ‘I do.’

‘You’d better sit down,’ she said, pulling out a chair.

‘Christopher’s the one you really want,’ he concluded, after telling them how he had found out about the incident. ‘Dad’s the one who found the woman, obviously, but Christopher was with him after that so he knows most of it first-hand. Then there’s the part about his sister being brought in by the green-keeper. They might have seen a bit more.
